The Research Center AI, Software and IT-Security stands for applied research in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Software Engineering, and IT and Cybersecurity. As the central research unit of the Department of Engineering, it consolidates all scientific activities in Computer Science and develops innovative solutions to technological challenges in the digital future.
Through close cooperation with national and international industry partners, public institutions, and research organizations, the center carries out projects that address current developments and translate them directly into practical, usable solutions. Insights gained from research and development activities flow directly into teaching and strengthen knowledge exchange between students, lecturers, and experts from industry.
As an integral part of the academic community, the Research Center AI, Software and IT-Security provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative technologies in the field of digital transformation.
The research activities of the center are organized into three research groups. Together, they cover a broad range of topics – from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) to the Internet of Things (IoT) and interdisciplinary software development, as well as innovative methods in information and IT security, such as technologies for secure, tamper‑resistant data transmission. The focus is always on practical and application‑oriented research questions.
Our focus lies in developing new AI methods that remain reliable even when only limited data is available but substantial domain knowledge exists. To achieve this, we combine modern neural models with logically interpretable techniques (“neuro‑symbolic AI”). This enables us to analyze not only traditional tabular data but also complex networks – such as corporate structures in the financial sector or biological interaction networks for drug development.
Another key area is Edge AI, where AI models run directly on small, energy‑efficient devices. We also research the safe deployment of AI in safety‑critical environments, such as public transportation.
We develop digital solutions with strong practical relevance in the areas of Extended Reality (XR), interdisciplinary software development, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Our work explores the use of Virtual Reality in education and in the simulation of complex scenarios in healthcare. In addition, we create platform‑independent web apps that provide professionals – such as those in nursing – with interactively prepared, evidence‑based knowledge, as well as serious games designed to teach ethical and diversity‑related competencies.
Another key focus lies in IoT applications for smart villages, such as securing water supply in small municipalities that are facing new challenges due to climate change and limited resources.
The IT Security research group focuses on secure digital systems and the protection of sensitive data in an increasingly interconnected world. We develop and analyze methods for secure, tamper‑resistant communication, investigate modern cryptographic approaches, and explore how IT infrastructures can be protected against emerging threats. A particular emphasis is placed on the security of network protocols and IoT systems, where limited resources and high availability pose special challenges.
In addition, we evaluate attack scenarios, design practical security concepts, and support organizations in building robust, resilient digital systems. Our research results flow directly into teaching activities and into collaborations with companies and public institutions.
