Grip'n'Play

Research period: 01.01.2024 - 31.12.2026

Almost a quarter of schoolchildren have difficulties learning to write. The primary project goal of Grip'n'Play is the development of motivational serious games to train pen holding and guidance and thus to support children of primary school age in learning to write. These should be playable with digital pen systems such as the SensoGrip system (pen with recording of finger and lead pressure and pen movements; developed as part of MA23 project 27-08 ) and third-party solutions. The SensoGrip system is to be further developed in terms of its functionalities as part of the project. The conception of the games is based on the analysis of the concrete need for serious games to promote writing skills and the participatory development of game ideas in the context of design thinking workshops with children, guardians, educators and occupational therapists. The serious games are developed on the basis of the Game-Mechanic Model and the gamification framework "Octalysis". The development is accompanied by evaluation measures and the final serious games are evaluated by means of a cross-over study. This will determine the extent to which serious games can support adherence, motivation and fun when practising graphomotor skills.

Research Goals

  • Development of at least three serious games to support graphomotor skills
  • Research into and optimisation of sensor technology for measuring force dosage and further development of pen functionality
  • Intensive project involvement of students in several project phases
  • Participatory development of an evaluation tool to measure the success of serious games
  • Evaluation of selected serious games
  • Mixed-methods evaluation of the acceptance of serious games in comparison to conventional support measures (worksheets) as part of the final evaluation
  • Dissemination of the results: Publication of current and final project results
