    During the studies

The High Tech Manufacturing department has various active projects, from Rapid Prototyping where we explore the potential of 3D printing and suitable materials, up to current challenges in automation. You therefore as a student have the unique opportunity of dealing with actual R&D project demands in practice, should you be looking for answers to problems encountered in the manufacturing chain. The "Holistic Manufacturing Intelligence3" project for the MONDI paper company is one example here. The High Tech Manufacturing department is working on this project together with the TIETO IT company. The objective of the project is to simulate paper factory processes, in order to remain "one step ahead" of actual events. It would thus be possible to predict and remedy imminent production errors or even stoppages before they occur. All the control systems of the factory will be optimized and interlinked. Our researchers are using complex simulation models to test this.

The degree program attaches great importance to linking our field of work to other technical disciplines of our department, as is the case in practice also. We are for instance working on six axis robot control together with the Embedded Systems Engineering section. High Tech Manufacturing is responsible for construction of the robot. Embedded Systems Engineering integrates all controller-related aspects in the planning and implements the control. Further close cooperation exists in this section with Rapid Prototyping, in the three-dimensional capture of object dimensions using 3D printers.

Embedded Systems Engineering controls capturing of object data in this respect.

Your professional future will benefit from our options for specific continuing education offered by the degree program. You may also obtain certifications often required in industry, such as the LabView certificate and/or PMA Project Management Austria Level D.

Building on your professional experience gained in technical production facilities, the master's degree program will intensify and expand your competencies in manufacturing technology, production logistics and control and in the core areas of quality management.

    • You will learn about the different manufacturing processes and their underlying physical principles. The degree program prepares you for the identification of cost-optimized, qualitative and functional production and manufacturing processes. Your specialized knowledge enables you to define and implement tailor-made criteria for manufacturing processes.
    • You will, in the area of Rapid Product Development, apply different methods of reverse engineering, rapid prototyping and rapid tooling. Practical exercises on the application of the processes will complement your knowledge portfolio.
    • You will acquire knowledge about the technical and organizational procedures for control of material flow in manufacturing companies. Building on the supply chain concept, you will be familiar with all methods of production planning and control as a function of production processes and types.
    • The degree program will teach you important action and decision-making skills relevant to product development and design. You will be aware of the importance of various national and international standards for quality assurance in the manufacturing industry.
    • You will enhance your professional education with new competencies in research and development and expand your expertise through a focus on praxis, methods and interdisciplinary skills.
    • You will in the course of your studies develop your leadership personality, train your perception of self and others (cross-cultural management, organizational development) and learn about assuming leadership responsibilities.

With suitable software tools for topology and structure optimization, the handling and execution of complex optimization tasks with regard to bionic design is shown on CAD designs. The solution of a complex optimization task as well as the selection of a suitable manufacturing process are explained.

    Learning results

    • Students are familiar with the fundamental benefits of Additive Manufacturing's design freedom in designing next-generation CAD components. Students will be able to use applications for FEM calculation and subsequent topology and structure optimization of additive to manufacturing components, to derive measures from the FEM calculations and to implement improvements in terms of weight and rigidity.

    • The students can simulate these components designed by the above-mentioned aids and then verify or validate the simulation results.

    Teaching method

Frontal lecture alternates with group work and flipped classroom approaches, preparation and presentation of a subject-specific topic by the students.

The requirement for maximum customizability of products while simultaneously reducing production costs by using robots and new digital systems form the basis of modern production processes. Small batch sizes and shorter product cycles require a model-based virtual verification, ie a review of real properties through computer simulations. The simulation of general technical systems, be it FEM or CFD analyzes of components or simulations of concrete work processes and handling operations (for example robotics), forms the bridge between the conception and the use of a technical development (verification).

    Learning results

    • The students are familiar with the effects of progressive digitization in the field of mechanical engineering on day-to-day operations in technology companies.

    • The students are familiar with concepts such as "digital twin", "smart factory" and a "consistently digital value chain". Students can apply simulation methods in the development process and know methods of simulating operational processes. The students know concepts of digital assistance systems (virtual, augmented, mixed reality) to support production processes.

As a graduate of this program, a wide range of occupational fields and career opportunities are open to you. Find out here where your path can take you.

The degree program is designed to teach not only technical skills but also important economical, social and ecological relationships. With the High Tech Manufacturing master's degree program, you will therefore open up many opportunities for setting your career on course. Highly qualified professionals, familiar with state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, are and will always be sought after for sustainable and dynamic growth. Subjects such as "Management systems for corporate management", "Business English for experts" or "Intercultural Communication in English" will open doors to markets abroad and offer you opportunities for an international managerial career.

The very broad education is considering technical and economical know-how as equally important and will qualify graduates for many areas in the life cycle of products. By an integrative approach to product lifecycle management, graduates are mastering not only manufacturing but also the associated support and product management processes. You will be working in project and process management, in quality management, in research and development or in supply chain management. You are active typically in the following sectors:

    • Automotive

    • Transport

    • Machine and plant construction

    • Iron and metal processing

    • Electrical engineering, electronics

    • Developing manufacturing concepts, optimizing existing manufacturing systems and compiling specific documentation for the plant.

      • Paper and packaging

      • Oil and gas

      • Chemicals and plastics

      • Environmental and recycling technology

      • Working in production logistics and organizing processes, planning material flow and applying methods for control of manufacturing.
