The growing importance of the Internet of Things (IoT) brings new challenges to teaching, as experts in this specialist area are urgently needed in industry/business; there is currently no end in sight to this trend. The diversity of subject areas that are consequently entering the IT sector and the associated risks is constantly increasing.
Experts in these hitherto non-IT fields must become aware of these risks and take responsibility. This awareness should already be raised during training. ELVIS offers the ideal basis for this. The management of the lab will also develop security awareness guides and teaching materials for a wide range of specialist areas and offer seminars, bridging courses etc. for relevant study programs. A university-wide free subject to raise awareness of IT security in the context of IoT is also planned.
ELVIS not only provides the infrastructure for one of the most current IT topics worldwide, i.e. the Internet of Things and its security-critical aspects, but also points the way for future didactic concepts. This laboratory is realised by means of material and personnel and is supported and evaluated by Cognosec in the course of material procurement and the creation of IoT security scenarios.
It not only supports practical training, diversity and Engineering for women, but also interdisciplinarity, which is becoming increasingly important. As the current incidents (e.g. Wikileaks: espionage by the CIA) show, it is essential that previously non-IT security specialist areas deal with IT security. To do justice to this trend, it is necessary for IoT and security to go hand in hand during training so that the above-mentioned incidents can be avoided.
Due to the rapid development of new technologies, didactics must also be flexible; ELVIS offers a basis here that makes it possible to react quickly to new trends and incorporate them immediately into the students' education. The laboratory will become a permanent and sustainable facility at FH Campus Wien and will be available to all study programs and departments, supporting them with a wide range of didactics on cutting-edge topics.
