Bachelor's Degree Program

Biomedical Science

extended part-time

Biomedical science examines medical samples, interprets laboratory measurements and establishes a connection between laboratory diagnostic results and clinical pictures. Biomedical scientists have a variety of methods and innovative technologies at their disposal to measure different values and functions such as blood parameters or lung function. You apply them in complex laboratory analysis processes and evaluate them. In addition to intensive laboratory work you also interact with patients, for example when taking samples or performing clinical diagnostics. The practically oriented degree program combines technological know-how with quality and process management. You will be educated in the core disciplines of histology, hematology, microbiology and clinical chemistry.

The criteria for acceptance are based solely on performance. The geographical origin of the applicant has no influence on the admission decision. The admission requirements must be met in all cases. All the required documents must be provided in time. The admission committee (which comprises, among others, the head of the academic section and representatives of the teaching staff) awards places to the applicants who score highest in the tests

The online entrance test is planned for the beginning of September. You will receive information and the invitation after the application deadline.

Assignment to test dates is made through the administration office. You will receive information in a timely manner.

If you pass the online admissions test, you will be invited to a personal admissions interview at Hochschule Campus Wien (September/October).

    During the studies

The Hochschule Campus Wien is characterised by extensive expertise and a large network. Hochschule Campus Wien is the only university of applied sciences in Austria to train all seven legally regulated upper-level medical-therapeutic-diagnostic professions as well as midwifery. An important partner in the areas of education, research and development is the Vienna Healthcare Group. We also work closely with the Biomed Austria Professional Association. Specialist events such as the Annual Conference of Biomedical Analysts take place regularly in our company. At our attractive main location, you also benefit from our modern infrastructure, which includes L2 laboratories(security level 2 laboratories). Furthermore, you have the opportunity to join a professional community across disciplines. There is great potential in research projects at the interface between health and technology and practical relevance is guaranteed when we organise one of our freely accessible lecture evenings with top-class experts as part of the Campus Lectures.

The degree program is practically oriented and combines comprehensive medical-technical and communicative expertise with the requirements for modern quality and process management. In a guaranteed, state-of-the-art laboratory space as well as through extensive internships, you will learn the core disciplines of hematology, histology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology and molecular biology. Hematology focuses on the detailed examination of blood and bone marrow.

In histology you will learn about tissue and cytology cells. In microbiology, you learn for example how throat cultures are examined for bacteria, fungi or viruses. In clinical chemistry you will primarily experiment with serum and other bodily fluids that you will analyze for metabolites, enzymes, vitamins or tumor markers. In immunology you will for example search for defects in the immune system and test for allergies or other intolerances.

    • You will acquire the necessary fundamental medical and technological knowledge for the complex laboratory analysis processes. Skills in process and quality management, health economics and the general legal regulations will round out your training.
    • You will acquire your practical experience in laboratories and functional areas of the health service and the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. There you will benefit from the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge in practical analysis methods and clinical diagnostics.
    • You will choose a specialization and deepen your practical knowledge of biomedical science.
    • You will acquire practical experience through guided internships, which make up one third of your education. In the internships you will learn to plan and conduct all the phases of a scientific laboratory project according to content and formal criteria.

The planned form of degree program in four years is intended to ensure that the workload of the study program is compatible with a (part-time) professional career by means of organizational and didactic measures. Due to the required ECTS for a bachelor's degree and an intensive interleaving of theory and practice in training laboratories, a higher proportion of face-to-face teaching at Hochschule Campus Wien is to be expected.

    1st to 6th semester:

The number of allocated teaching hours amounts to 20-30 hours per week and consists of courses at Hochschule Campus Wien or online formats. The allocation and announcement of the concrete timetables takes place in each preceding semester.

The lessons can be scheduled in the following time periods:

    Mon-Thu 3 p.m.-9.30 p.m.
    Fri 1.00 p.m.-9.30 p.m.
    Sat 8.00 a.m.-5.15 p.m.
max. 1 blocked week per semester

    7th and 8th semester:

The fourth year of study (7th and 8th semesters) is largely devoted to the completion of clinical internship training and participation is required to the extent of at least 30 hours per week in routine work hours of the internship sites during the day.

    Number of teaching weeks
    18 per semester

In order to enable all students to gain the necessary practical experience and thus to complete their studies within the regular study period, practical learning phases may take place during the summer months if required. Four vacation weeks in July or August are scheduled for it in any case.

In order to be able to provide all students with the necessary practical experience and thus enable them to complete their studies within the regular duration of their studies, there may be practical learning phases during the summer months if required. Selection and participation according to available places. There may be separate selection procedures.

    After graduation

As a graduate of this program, a wide range of occupational fields and career opportunities are open to you. Find out here where your path can take you.

With this degree you will be qualified to practice the profession of biomedical scientist. The MTD Act is the basis for this degree program. According to the MTD Act, numerous activities may only be performed by members of the biomedical science profession. For you this means that you are guaranteed to find a job and that you can practice your profession throughout the EU. The practically oriented degree program means that you will be ready to start work immediately and are optimally prepared to plan and conduct every phase of a complex laboratory analysis process. In the diagnostic stage, you first decide based on the test results how to proceed further. As part of your commitment to lifelong learning you are obligated to keep abreast of the latest technologies so that you can apply and evaluate them. The results of your analyses support the diagnosis, follow-up examination, therapy monitoring and rehabilitation of patients. You work in various health care facilities with materials of human origin and examine in particular blood, bone marrow, urine, feces, tissue, amniotic fluid, saliva and hair. You use a variety of laboratory equipment, prepare tissue samples, examine stained preparations under the microscope or cultivate cell cultures. In clinical diagnostics you work directly with patients and with the help of ECG, spirometry or EEG to measure the performance and functionality of organs such as the heart, lungs or brain. More and more biomedical scientists at universities and in the pharmaceutical industry are pursuing careers in research and development. Many also decide to found their own businesses. You can also apply your laboratory analytical knowledge in other industries. The degree program provides a strong foundation together with practical work experience and continuing training to manage teams and laboratory facilities.
