When you join the Architecture - Green Building program, you are choosing an architectural course devoted to making our environment more livable. Aside from design and planning, you will learn a great deal about the construction of buildings. The focus on future-proof building will qualify you to design structures that are sustainable and energy-producing, and to account for lifecycles even at the planning phase. EU Directive EPBD 2010 on the Energy Performance of Buildings is raising the demand for experts in green building by obliging member states to construct only zero-energy buildings from 2020.

    Before the studies

    In addition to a solid foundation in mathematics (required as the basis of structural physics), you will ideally have well-developed spatial perception abilities and an interest in design. You are creative with the drawing ability to draft your innovative ideas. You enjoy working with computer programs that can calculate, accurately draw, animate and render your designs. To work as part of a project team, you will need a talent for coordination.

    • a relevant apprenticeship qualification (main and ancillary building trades) or
    • a graduation from a school for intermediate vocational education (vocational school for construction technology & construction industry or vocational school for construction engineering - focus on renovation technology) or
    • other equivalent (construction-related) relevant training

    Language requirements for admission

    The required language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is at least

    • German - level C1.

    Courses are partly held in English. Sufficient knowledge of English is therefore necessary to be able to follow the lessons.

    Legalization of foreign documents

    Applicants may require legalization of documents from countries other than Austria in order for them to have the evidential value of domestic public documents. Information on the required legalizations can be found here in PDF format.

    Translation of your documents

    For documents that are neither in German nor English, a translation by a sworn and court-certified interpreter is required. Your original documents should have all the necessary legalization stamps before translation so that the stamps are also translated. The translation must be firmly attached to the original document or a legalized copy.

    Aim

    • The aim of the admission procedure is to offer Study places to those who complete the multi-stage admission procedure with the best results. The test procedures are based on the skills required for the intended profession. Approximately 100 new students are admitted each academic year as part of the admissions process.

    Procedure

    • Part 1: The computerised admission test contains a series of test requirements and determines whether you fulfil basic intellectual requirements. The timed test consists of the following parts: Logic, General Knowledge, German and Spatial Awareness.
    • Part 2: You will then take part in an admission interview, which will give you a first impression of your personal aptitude.
    • Each of these two parts is awarded points. The final ranking is based on the total number of points.

    Decision

    • The admissions committee, which also includes the head of degree program and the teaching staff representative, awards Study places based on the ranking. The overall process and all assessments of the admission procedure are documented in a comprehensible manner.
    • The criteria that lead to admission are exclusively merit-based. Geographical allocations of applicants have no influence on admission. The admission requirements must be met. The final ranking of applicants is determined after completion of the above-mentioned stages of the admission procedure.
    • You will be informed whether we can offer you a study place, whether you have been placed on the waiting list or whether you have not successfully completed the admission procedure one week after the respective admission date - no later than the end of July 2026.

    Admission procedure

    You will receive an invitation to the admissions day after positive examination of all relevant documents. You will receive the exact date and schedule for the admission interviews approximately one week before the assigned date. Depending on the number of applicants, additional admission dates may be scheduled.

    During our online infosessions, we will present the main areas of focus of the bachelor's degree program offered by the Department of Building and Design. We will provide you with information about the content of the degree program and give you an overview of your excellent career opportunities. Afterwards, there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

    In the 20 years and more that Hochschule Campus Wien (HCW) has been running civil engineering programs, the university of applied sciences has built up a wealth of expertise and a broad network that offers you numerous possibilities during your program, when seeking an internship and when embarking on a career. Aside from architect's offices, this network includes reputable construction firms such as STRABAG SE, which cooperates with Hochschule Campus Wien in the further education of its staff and other areas. You will also benefit from the knowledge you acquire in R&D projects. Aside from well-founded theory, practical relevance is our top priority. For this reason the program offers you a chance to apply yourself to a large-scale, future-focused project. One course invites you to develop ideas for expanding Altes Landgut, our main site in the new Verteilerkreis district of the city. There is a real chance that your ideas will be transformed into reality within a few years. We also offer regular training through our series of seminars dealing with selected topics from the construction business. Practical relevance is also guaranteed at our Campus Lecture evenings, which are open to all and feature contributions from prominent experts.

    This program is all about the future of architecture. At present, buildings account for some 40 percent of total energy consumption. As a graduate of the program, your aim will be to change this situation as creatively as possible. In contrast to the university's traditional architecture course, this practical bachelor program enables you to specialize in structural engineering projects involving buildings utilized for residential and commercial purposes.

    Rather than focus on artistic and historical aspects, you will focus on the issue of sustainability; even at the design and planning stage, you will consider the lifecycle of a structure and apply long-term thinking to its construction. This program will give you a high level of professional expertise in both engineering and project management. Graduates of the bachelor's and master's degree program Architecture - Green Building at Hochschule Campus Wien, as well as university graduates, have the opportunity to use the professional title of “Architect” in the future.

    • Your field of study will cover the full spectrum of design, planning and construction: principles of green building, location-specific construction, drafting, architectural rendering, architectural theory, structural design, building climate control, building services, law and construction economics. The main objective is to create buildings that are innovative, resource-conserving and energy-efficient while meeting high aesthetic standards.

      Sustainable means:
      • Economical: You will optimize costs, taking into consideration not just production costs but also those arising throughout the existence of a structure and ultimately the disposal costs (lifecycle costing).
      • Environmentally sound: Throughout the lifecycle, you will pursue resource-friendly solutions (ecological footprint), and
      • Social: You will ensure the highest satisfaction levels with the building projects you implement, not only from users but also observers (blue building).
    • During the program you will complete wide-ranging internships in which you apply the specific theoretical knowledge you have acquired.

    Content

    Convert a design task: preparation of the general data analysis, sample collection, material collection, study of the parameters defining the essential design criteria, finding the design idea, alternative studies, development and formulation of the draft to the predetermined level of detail, as shown in the required plans and standards, model, perspective sketches, rendering description. Public oral presentation based on the plans and the model.

    Content

    The knowledge acquired in individual subjects is applied in an interdisciplinary manner in the execution of a fictitious construction project. The exercise project is worked on in depth by the students in teams. The exercise covers the subject areas of planning, building physics, construction and construction management and spans an arc from the architectural preliminary design to the award.

    Content

    In the center of the work free space planning is the mediation between landscape architectural planning and action. At the beginning is the clarification of key terms. The landscape as the actual field of action, landscape architecture rather than man-made structures, which have always been transformed. In the city, as well as, in the country, and in between. Types of open spaces and the degree of public opinion contribute to the debate. The next focus is the introduction to the landscape architectonic design. Basics of space education are discussed, as well as the shape of the elements of the free space. Then contemporary projects will be presented and analyzed together.

    • neighborhood garden and community gardens,

    Demand for green building experts is rising as buildings are required to meet ever more stringent environmental standards. EU Directive EPBD 2010 on the Energy Performance of Buildings has accelerated the trend by obliging member states to construct only zero-energy buildings from 2020. New buildings will have to be almost energy self-sufficient in the way they are built and operated through high energy efficiency standards and renewable sources of energy. This target will apply to public sector buildings as early as 2018. As a graduate of the program, you will be equipped to meet that challenge. In your capacity as an expert, you will be qualified to pursue a broad range of creative duties for engineering and architect's offices, the construction industry and building trade, consulting firms, private property developers, public contract awarders and supervisory authorities. You can use the job title of “Architect” after completing your bachelor's and master's degree in Architecture - Green Building at Hochschule Campus Wien once you have three years of practical experience and have successfully passed the civil engineering exam.
