In recent decades, the importance of building physics in architectural design has increased significantly. As people today spend up to 90% of their lives indoors, a precise coordination of thermal protection in winter and summer, moisture protection, and sound insulation is necessary to ensure both user comfort and building sustainability. The lecture introduces the physical fundamentals of thermal, moisture, and sound protection. Building on the basics of heat transfer through the building envelope, the overall energy balance of buildings is calculated, including an examination of summer thermal protection. The lecture introduces the fundamentals of building ecology and illustrates the ecological impacts of construction. Key concepts such as sustainability, resource efficiency, circular economy, and climate neutrality are discussed. A central focus is placed on the ecological assessment of building materials, components, and buildings using life cycle assessment and ecological indicators such as primary energy demand, global warming potential, and acidification potential. Students also learn how Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are developed and applied. Building on this, the course presents tools and methods for life cycle analysis and for the ecological optimization of construction projects. In addition, it addresses national and international building certification systems such as klimaaktiv, DGNB, LEED, and BREEAM. Overall, the course provides an understanding of how ecological criteria can be systematically integrated into the planning, construction, and operation of buildings.

    Learning results

    • Students will be able to describe the ecological impacts of construction (e.g., resource consumption, energy demand, emissions, waste generation) and assess their relevance for sustainability and building ecology.

    • Students will be able to explain the principles and methods of life cycle assessment (LCA) and apply ecological indicators (e.g., GWP, primary energy demand, acidification potential) to building materials, components, and buildings.

    • Students will be able to identify concepts and tools of sustainable building certification and compare their evaluation dimensions (e.g., klimaaktiv, DGNB, LEED, BREEAM).

    Learning results

    • Students can apply the basic mathematical concepts of differential calculus to differential equations (DGE) in order to classify them precisely according to type (ordinary vs. partial), order and linearity. They can explain in their own words the fundamental difference between a general, particular and singular solution as well as between initial and boundary value problems.

    • Students are able to independently select and apply standard mathematical methods for ordinary differential equations in order to calculate analytical solution functions for first and second order problems. Students can mathematically formulate real physical and engineering processes (such as continuous growth processes, Newton's cooling law or mechanical vibrations) in the form of differential equations and interpret the calculated solution functions in the application context.

    • Students demonstrate the ability to solve differential equations and coupled dynamic systems using computers. They can implement numerical methods (such as the Runge-Kutta method) or state-space reductions in Python, display the results graphically (e.g. directional fields or cooling curves) and verify the correctness of an assumed solution statistically/algebraically by inserting it into the differential equation. Students are able to mathematically analyze the dynamic behavior of coupled multi-body systems (e.g. multi-story buildings under dynamic load) using mass, damping and stiffness matrices. They can investigate the physical effects of excitation frequencies and structurally assess the risk of a catastrophic resonance disaster.
