In order to make the packaging industry more recyclable, products need to be redesigned. This is where the “SLEEVE” project comes in, focusing on plastic packaging that is fitted with sleeves.
“Sleeves” refer to a specific type of packaging labeling. This method covers up to 100% of the main body of the package and typically does not require the use of adhesive. Sleeves can offer added value in many ways. However, recyclability needs to be better addressed. If the main packaging body is correctly identified during sorting and/or the sleeves can be easily separated, sleeves can contribute to improving the quality of recycled materials - we are convinced of this - since contaminants (such as printing inks) can be optimally removed from the material stream.
The consortium has identified various levers for optimizing the recyclability of sleeve packaging:
The project aims to evaluate advantageous material combinations for sleeves from specific product categories (use cases) in terms of material characterization, communication elements, sustainability aspects, and Design4Recycling (packaging design). Surveying consumers’ attitudes and behaviors is intended to provide insight into current sorting practices and their potential. To improve detection for sorting purposes, the researchers aim to identify optimal material combinations for packaging through experimental assessment of sortability.
