The migration of potentially harmful substances from food packaging is a topic that is the subject of intense debate among the public, researchers and industry representatives. The COIN set-up project "MIGRATOX" aims to develop in vitro-based methods and test strategies that can be used to test food contact materials for their safety for end consumers.
Packaging materials such as paper, various plastics, glass or metals consist of a variety of substances that are introduced both intentionally during production and unintentionally through degradation reactions or contamination (so-called NIAS - non-intentionally added substances). While the basic components of packaging are tested for safety, it is often very difficult to fully assess the hazard potential of NIAS. The main focus of the project is on critical contaminants such as endocrine disruptors or mutagenic substances.
The 5-year development project is being carried out in direct cooperation with the Molecular Biotechnology study programs and the research partner OFI. This project emphasises close cooperation with major international food and packaging producers in order to ensure the safety of packaging materials in the long term and to strengthen consumer confidence in the industry.
