LISTEN! Peer Counseling

This page contains automated translations.

Peer counseling provides support from students for students - for who knows better what you need during your studies than the students themselves?

If your life is currently full of hurdles and obstacles, the trained LISTEN! peer counselors are there to help you along the way, free of charge and with a low threshold.

LISTEN! is a project to promote mental health at Hochschule Campus Wien, supported by the Wiener Gesundheitsförderung (Vienna Health Promotion Agency).

Peer Counseling at Hochschule Campus Wien: The Project LISTEN!

LISTEN! stands for "Living Interconnected Student Engagement" and was developed from a teaching project with the support of the Rectorate and Workplace Health Management to sustainably promote the health of our students.

The project was set up to offer students simple and uncomplicated counseling services and the opportunity for social networking. Training courses are also being developed for teaching staff who are in direct contact with students. The aim is to raise students' health awareness and show them what to do in crisis situations. The training and services offered by LISTEN! are closely coordinated with the students in order to take their needs into account.

If you are currently in a difficult situation and would like to talk to a peer, we are here for you - because you don't have to manage everything on your own. Students can turn to the peer counselors with a wide variety of problems. The problems can concern both your studies and your private situation.

  • Exam anxiety

  • Excessive demands during studies

  • Conflicts at the university or in your personal environment

Our peer counselors are students at Hochschule Campus Wien who have completed training as part of an open course. If you would like to become a peer counselor yourself, you can find more detailed information under the heading You Would Like to Become a Peer Counselor?

How Do I Get Peer Counseling and How Does It Work?

Send us a brief description of your request using the contact form or by e-mail to peer-beratung@hcw.ac.at.

A team of two peers will contact you and make an appointment for a personal meeting. You and your peer counselors can decide together where you want to meet and it is up to you and your peers to decide how often and over what period of time you want to meet. Online counseling sessions, e.g. via Zoom, are also possible. This means you can also use the service from abroad. Data protection and confidentiality are very important to us, which is why all peer counselors are bound to confidentiality.

The LISTEN! peer counseling does not provide therapy or acute crisis intervention. If you need medical-therapeutic support due to (psychological) stress situations, our peers can assist you on the way to professional help.

You Would Like to Become a Peer Counselor?

Peer counseling offers an opportunity to improve your own counseling and communication skills and to support other students. Peer counselors are trained as part of an open course for which students can register via the portal (log-in required). The prerequisite for the training is the desire to develop counseling and social skills in areas such as mental health, resilience, stress management and strengthening psychosocial resources. In order to work as a peer counselor, participation in at least 80% of the course and all practical parts of the training is required.

After completing the training, you decide together with the lecturers whether you would like to take on the role of peer counselor at Hochschule Campus Wien. As a peer counselor, you will always work in a team and advise students with various problems, be it about their studies or personal matters. As support for peer counselors, there are regular team meetings with supervision and case discussions, led by the lecturers.

Peer counselors are remunerated financially. The fee for 60 minutes of counseling is currently € 21.19 gross.

The LISTEN! peer counseling does not provide therapy or acute crisis intervention. But as a peer counselor, you will learn which medical, therapeutic, social or financial support services you can refer students to in an emergency.

      Ein Portrait von Angela Flachsbarth

I offer a safe space where you can talk openly about anything. Together, we will take an outside look at your situation to discover new perspectives and find ways to face difficult moments with strength.

      Angela Flachsbarth, peer counselor

      Ein Portrait von Lilly Hesske

If you are looking for someone to talk to or need a new perspective, I am here for you—as an equal, with curiosity and an open ear. As a fellow occupational therapy student, I know the challenges of studying and everyday life all too well. Together, I would like to help you achieve greater clarity and ease.

      Lilly Hesske, peer counselor

      Ein Portrait von Lena Keinrath

It is important to me that every person has someone with whom they can talk openly and without fear. No one should have to deal with everything on their own.

      Lena Keinrath, Peer counselor

      Ein Portrait von Katharina Kostistansky

From my own experience, I know the feeling of being stuck, of “having to” do too much, of feeling “not enough” or “too much.” As a queer, neurodivergent person, I would especially like to invite all those who feel “different” or ‘alone’ to explore a safe and non-judgmental “We can do this together.”

      Katharina Kostistansky, peer counselor

      Ein Portrait von Sophie Matula

I know how lonely and overwhelming some situations can be—that's exactly why I don't just listen, I empathize. I'm there without judging, because I know how important it is to be truly understood.

      Sophie Matula, peer counselor

      Ein Portrait von Nikola Salzmann

I am a positive and empathetic person, and I find it easy to put myself in other people's shoes. In challenging situations, I am happy to support you and appreciate open discussions, which I value greatly.

      Nikola Salzmann, peer counselor

      Portrait Selin Kizil

Thanks to my studies in social work at the University of Applied Sciences Campus Vienna and my preparatory course in psychotherapy, I look forward to meeting you with empathy and authenticity, listening to you attentively, and working together in a resource- and solution-oriented manner.

      Portrait Desiree Wurm

Difficult situations and problems can only be solved by talking about them, not by ignoring them or avoiding them. I would like to accompany you on this journey.

I am empathetic and  grateful for any (emotional) openness on the part of my counterpart. I am happy to provide support on all topics related to  studying, but also on personal matters such as queer issues or finding a therapist. I look forward to working with you to identify the core of the problem and find creative solutions.

      Anja Hulka, peer counselor

      Portrait Marlene Lehner

My strength lies in accompanying people on their journey with my open and positive manner, especially when it comes to LGBTQIA+ issues. I promote respectful exchange and help people find new insights and solutions that strengthen their own identity.
