Rhetoric - Grammar - Text comprehension

The courses offered by the Gender & Diversity Management  office are tailored to the needs of our students and are taught by qualified philologists with many years of professional experience. In semester courses, you will specifically train all language skills - from speaking and presenting to grammar, vocabulary and writing. Different levels allow both beginners and professionals to take part in the courses.

Winter semester 2025/26

Target group: People who have at least level B2 or have just started with C1, i.e:

  • You have no problem reading and understanding longer texts from the newspaper!
  • You enjoy writing longer texts yourself, such as summaries or discussions!
  • You can follow German-language radio and television programmes!
  • You enjoy expressing yourself in German and have no problem discussing in groups or in front of groups.

Course content

  • Reading authentic text material (mainly specialist journals, literature and current affairs features); then summarising the most important content and making a personal statement and expanding your vocabulary through reflection.
  • Writing argumentative text types on current issues and discussing the advantages and disadvantages using context-specific vocabulary.
  • Spontaneous and fluent speaking in partner and group settings on a wide range of topics. Giving short presentations on familiar but also more complex topics with a focus on convincing argumentation.

Duration: During the semester break from 26.1.2026 to 5.2.2026

Teaching times: Monday to Thursday from 9.00 am to 12.15 pm

Teaching units: 4 dates per week á 4UE/day - a total of 2 weeks with 8 dates (= 32UE)

  • Talking about yourself: Name, place of residence, origin, education, profession
  • Greetings, ordering in a restaurant, belonging and possessions, wishes and preferences
  • Reading short dialogues, advertisements, promotional texts etc.
  • Writing simple and short texts
  • Grammar level A1

Term: 10/ February 2026 until 9/ April 2026

Teaching times: always Tuesday and Thursday from 9.00 to 10.30 a.m.

Teaching units: 2x 2 lessons = 180 min. / week, 18 dates per semester - 36 lessons in total

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 12

Registration period: 7.1.2026 to 4.2.2026

Target group: People who have ideally already attended a B1 course.

Course content

  • Speaking about everyday life in Vienna and at the university of applied sciences
  • Reading interesting texts from literature, politics, science and culture
  • Speaking about current topics from social life in German-speaking countries
  • Writing summaries, argumentative texts and statements of opinion
  • Discussing grammatical problems, e.g. passive voice, subjunctive, subordinate clauses - main clauses

  • Writing argumentative text types on the basis of input heard or read, discussing advantages and disadvantages using context-specific vocabulary
  • Spontaneous and fluent speaking in partner and group settings on a wide and varied range of topics
  • Giving short presentations on familiar and complex topics

Duration: 11.2.2026 until 10.4.2026

Teaching times: always Wednesday and Friday from 9.00 to 10.30 a.m.

Teaching units: 2x 2 lessons = 180 min. / week, 18 dates per semester - 36 lessons in total

Number of participants: min. 5, max. 15

Target group: People with German as a foreign language at a very good level (C1), i.e:

  • You enjoy speaking in front of or with other people
  • You enjoy discussing current events or topics
  • You would like to use the language in small role plays and simulations to communicate more confidently in everyday life, during your studies or at work
  • You are interested in idiomatic expressions and phrases that can help you when speaking
  • You have no problem preparing shorter and longer presentations and then giving them in front of your colleagues

Registration takes place online via the HCW portal for students. In the "Courses" section, you will find the course overview under "Other courses offered" and can register for one or more courses there.

The course programme is only available to students of the University of Applied Sciences Campus Vienna.

For applicants: As soon as you have successfully completed your admission procedure and have access to the HCW portal, you can register for the courses.

Participation is free of charge.

Yes, you will receive ECTS Credits for the successful completion of the German course (number according to the course description). Important: If you are interested in transferring credits, please clarify with the secretariat of your study program before the start of the course whether the ECTS Credits you have earned can be transferred to your degree programme.

The course is successfully completed if

  • 80% attendance is achieved,
  • the two partial performances are completed positively,
  • and 80% of the homework is completed.

Grades will be awarded from the summer onwards to facilitate credit transfer. If the above criteria for a positive final degree are not met, a failing grade will be entered on your certificate - unless you withdraw from the course within the first two weeks.

If fewer than five people are registered for a course, the University of Applied Sciences Campus Vienna reserves the right to cancel the course. You will receive a cancellation by email.
