Project duration: 4 May 2020 to 29 October 2021

The project aims to identify customised packaging suitable for the circular economy for all partners in the food industry (producers and food packaging manufacturers), which represent optimal future-oriented solutions in terms of their recyclability and life cycle assessment (LCA), taking product protection into account.

As a project partner in the project, which is funded by the province of Upper Austria and managed by OFI, our task is to analyse the environmental performance and recyclability of companies' existing packaging, to jointly identify possible alternative packaging structures and then to evaluate these alternatives and compare them with the packaging originally used.

As users in this industry project, special support is given to companies that are given the opportunity to optimise their products in terms of producer responsibility through low-threshold access to tailor-made assessment methods for the sustainability of packaging.

The new holistic approach to the potential for improvement drastically minimises the environmental impact of the packaging-food system and meets the required EU targets, namely the recyclability property and thus the achievement of a higher recycling rate. In addition, food safety is increased for the project partners (film producers and film users) through the correct and legally compliant use of recyclate as a secondary packaging material for both internal and external plastic waste.

Research Goals

  • Assessment of the life cycle assessment of currently used packaging
  • Evaluation of the recyclability of currently used packaging
  • Optimisation of existing packaging or identification of alternative packaging
