Green SandboxBuilder – Regulatory sandboxes in the field of sustainable construction and renovation

Project duration: 1.9.2022 to 31.8.2023

In the "Green SandboxBuilder" project, the need for regulatory sandboxes for ecologically sustainable and climate-effective projects in the construction sector is being systematically surveyed for the first time in Austria. Basically, these are temporary and spatially limited exemptions from existing regulations in order to test innovations and legislative changes. While research is already being conducted in the mobility and energy sectors with the help of regulatory sandboxes, this tool is still largely unknown in the domestic construction sector. However, the implementation of regulatory sandboxes could significantly accelerate the introduction of technological, procedural and Social Work innovations and make an important contribution to achieving sustainability goals.

• Creation of a catalogue of relevant laws, regulations and standards
• Scoping of regulatory areas of tension in sustainable construction
• Creation and evaluation of a needs analysis for the Austrian construction industry
• Creation of concrete proposals for regulatory sandboxes
• Submission of recommendations for implementation
