Overweight, a lack of physical activity and motor skill deficits can already be observed in childhood. Nevertheless, there is a lack of reliable and comparable data on the health and fitness of primary school pupils in Austria and Hungary. This is precisely where the international research project Interreg-AT-HU EduFit comes in: it provides new insights into the status of children’s physical development, with the aim of establishing cross-border health monitoring. This pilot project lays the foundations for the targeted implementation of preventive measures in the future.

In collaboration with Széchenyi István University in Győr, Hochschule Campus Wien is establishing a cross-border health monitoring programme for primary school-aged children. To this end, health and fitness data are being collected in accordance with uniform scientific standards. The results will, for the first time, enable reliable comparisons between the two countries and provide important insights for health promotion and prevention in childhood. Accompanying training programmes and the exchange of specialist knowledge will also strengthen cooperation between research and practice across national borders.

Research Goals

  • First representative survey on physical fitness, body composition and health behaviours in the Austria-Hungary border region
  • Linking health data with regional and socio-economic variables
  • Initial findings regarding possible links between clinical risk factors (overweight and obesity) and environmental or behavioural factors (region, lifestyle)
