Development of "green cartons" to increase the sustainability and recyclability of food packaging made from renewable raw materials, building on the findings of the innovation cheque for barrier-coated cartonboard materials

Research duration: 12.2020 - 11.2021

In order to increase the sustainability of food packaging, research is increasingly focussing on materials made from renewable raw materials such as cardboard. Until now, cardboard has been extrusion-coated with plastic to create a barrier against oxygen or water vapour and thus prevent product spoilage. In order to improve the recyclability of cardboard and contribute to the required reduction of plastic in packaging waste, Cardbox Packaging Wolfsberg GmbH is developing barrier-coated cardboard materials based on the findings of the innovation cheque. This is being done with the support of the Section Packaging and Resource Management at FH Campus Wien and funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG. The aim is to make the material accessible for areas whose requirements are currently only met by pure plastic packaging or heavily coated cardboard.

Research Goals

  • Further development of the coating and the process
  • Optimisation of the packaging design and expansion of the material application field
  • Replacement of plastic packaging with cardboard-based solutions
