Due to the steadily increasing hygiene requirements for ventilation, filtration, and air-conditioning technology—a trend accelerated by the pandemic in general, but particularly in the medical sector—it is essential to prepare graduates of the Clinical Engineering program for these heightened demands.

The increasing complexity of ventilation systems and the increasing requirements regarding room hygiene, not only in the healthcare sector (e.g. air purification devices in compulsory schools), make it necessary to focus teaching on the content of the courses "Installation and Air Conditioning", "HVAC Dimensioning" and "Operation and Maintenance", as these provide an essential basis for the planning, construction and operation of building services systems in the healthcare sector. Key topics in the technical specialisation "Clinical Engineering" include, for example, the application of requirements engineering methods for the elicitation, analysis and management of requirements in the technical specialist areas of healthcare.

The teaching content of the above-mentioned courses is to be adapted in order to create the basis for students to operate existing systems in the medical environment in an optimal and trouble-free manner. The endowed professorship is intended to further develop the focus on ventilation technology in the CE study programs. With the help of the Teaching Support Centre, the courses are to be readjusted and adapted to the current situation by implementing new teaching methods (e.g. flipped classroom), free / open courses to the new circumstances, keyword e-learning. The use of new presentation and teaching methods is intended to achieve a higher degree of flexibility for ubiquitous study in part-time CE study programs. Bachelor's and Master's theses in the field of Clinical Engineering are to be supervised by the endowed professor. Furthermore, R&D activities with companies from industry and business as well as the operators of relevant institutions in this specialised field are to be further expanded.

The Vienna location is to be further developed as a centre of expertise for innovations in medical facilities at Hochschule Campus Wien. In addition to the endowed professorship, the Departments of Health Sciences, Applied Nursing Science, Building and Design and Applied Life Sciences at Hochschule Campus Wien will also be involved in addition to the purely technical study programs in order to interlink the specialist areas through interdisciplinary research and development.

Research Goals

  • The courses in the Clinical Engineering study programs (Bachelor's degree and Clinical Engineering specialisation in the Master's degree in Technical Management), "Dimensioning HVAC", "Installation and Air Conditioning", "Operation and Maintenance" (HVAC and Operating Technology subject area) have been set up or adapted
  • Bachelor's and Master's theses in the field of HVAC and operating technology are supervised by the endowed professor
  • R&D activities in clinical engineering with a focus on HVAC and operating technology have been established in cooperation with industry, business, the operators of relevant facilities and other academic training centres
  • Students have been actively involved in R&D projects in the Clinical Engineering study programs in the OPIC rooms
