Research period: 15.9.2020 to 31.12.2022

Health literacy is seen as the individual's ability to develop behaviour that contributes to maintaining health. It is a key competence for a healthy life and its promotion is an Austrian health objective.
In addition to the general model of health literacy, the specific concept of movement-related health literacy (bGK) has been established. For Physiotherapy, this concept is a central model that can be used when designing health-promoting interventions. The promotion of physical activity-related health literacy is an essential goal in the realisation of a health-oriented lifestyle that takes into account national recommendations for physical activity

The aim of this project is to design a new approach to the assessment of bGK that is tailored to physiotherapeutic health promotion by analysing, evaluating and adapting existing instruments. The aim is to develop a tool that records movement, control and movement-specific self-regulation skills and allows a differentiated profile of bGK to be created. The newly developed questionnaire will initially be applied to a cohort of students at FH Campus Wien with diverse interests in order to validate the questionnaire and analyse the students' bGK.
The revised questionnaire will subsequently be extended to other target groups (children, young people, families, late adulthood) and different settings (school, university, neighbourhood centre, retirement home) in order to generate a tool adapted to the diverse lifestyles of the population.

Research Goals

  • Extension of the existing questionnaire to determine the bGK of the University of Erlangen
  • To answer the question of how valid and practicable the newly developed questionnaire is when applied to students at FH Campus Wien
  • To answer the question of how exercise-related health literacy is developed among students at FH Campus Wien and whether differences can be identified in terms of age, gender, field of study or culture and diversity
  • Researching the physical activity-related health literacy of students at the start of their degree programme
  • To answer the question of how the newly developed questionnaire can be adapted to different target groups and settings
