Duration: 8.10.2018 until 31.5.2020

Public space is available to all residents and visitors to the city as a place to meet, linger and communicate. Since 2010, Fair Play teams have been deployed in 15 districts to deal professionally with communication in public spaces in Vienna. A framework concept defines the goals that the teams are to pursue. As the representative of the client (City of Vienna), MA 13 is now interested in the influence that Fair Play teams have on communication and perspectives on public spaces.

Research Goals

Evaluation of the work of the fair play teams with regard to the achievement of the objectives set out in the framework concept and detailed concepts:

  1. Provider and improvement of the Social Work qualities of public space.
  2. Strengthening people's participation in the design and coexistence of public spaces.

These objectives include the following sub-objectives:

  • As many people as possible use public space or have access to it, especially if they are dependent on it.
  • The enjoyable and learning-orientated use of public space is possible.
  • Deficiencies with regard to the availability or equipment of public spaces are addressed and can therefore be dealt with.
  • Differences of interest and conflicts in public spaces are used to draw attention to underlying social problems.
  • People deal with the different demands in and around public spaces as independently as possible and participate in negotiation and communication processes.
  • People take as much responsibility as possible for shaping and living together in public spaces.
  • People expand their room for manoeuvre as well as their individual and collective options for action, particularly with regard to the use of public space.
